Quick Sip: Glen Manor 2010 Sauvignon Blanc

Hello Friends,

Remember the memorable line from Tom Hank’s Forrest Gump movie – “My momma said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." Well, that can sometimes be the case when traversing the Virginia wine trail. Besides finding varietal wines like Cabernet Franc, Viognier, Chardonnay, and Merlot, which are fairly common in Virginia tasting rooms, you may very well run into an occasional well-done Tannat, Petit Manseng, Pinotage, or Sauvignon Blanc.

Glen Manor 2010 Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is generally grown in cool to moderate climates and Virginia is generally warm to hot. Glen Manor Vineyards and Linden Vineyards (Avenius Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc) located in northern Virginia, in my opinion, turn out very nice Sauvignon Blanc examples with good typicity and acidity. Both producers grow their Sauvignon Blanc at higher elevations where temperatures are generally cooler than normal. That said, the 2010 Virginia growing season was unusually dry, humid, and extremely hot. This selection, the 2010 Glen Manor Sauvignon Blanc, offers delicate citrus and melon scents with a mineral like flintiness and straw notes on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with a round texture, moderate acidity, balanced flavors, and a medium-length finish. This is a nice effort considering the hot, dry, and ripe 2010 vintage that presented difficulties (e.g. higher sugars, lower acids, higher alcohol levels, sugar ripeness but not always phenolic ripeness) for some producers. I’ll leave you with a tasting assignment: Find and try a Glen Manor 2009 Sauvignon Blanc next to the 2010 vintage. The 2009 vintage was fairly normal (not too hot, too cold, or too wet) and you and your friends will have fun enjoying the wines and discerning the differences. Cheers!
